This is something I would really like to get going. It's simple to set up, simple to operate and helps save lives.
I see many people make threads about friends and family members who have struggled with cancer and other awful things. This is our chance at ebaums to help scientists unravel codes and understand many of these diseases such as cancer, HIV, Alzheimer’s etc...
Basically it is a small program you download that receives codes from scientist’s, works on them and sends it back to the scientists. Millions of people are folding making a massive difference. Breakthroughs have already happened because of normal pc’s users folding information.
Running this program does not affect the performance of your computer CPU speed or bandwidth.
Here is a flash movie that gives you a bit more information. http://www.teamshort-media.com/videos/foldflash2.html
If you decide you want to take part and help here is the program.
NT/2000/XP http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/release/Folding@Home503.EXE
Windows 98/ME http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/release/Folding@Home4.EXE
Linux Console(x86) http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/release/FAH502-Linux.exe
Mac OS X http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/release/FAH4-GUI.dmg
Once the program is running, right click the icon in systray go to configure and enter team number 42864 (45070 for The Doom Community) and your name hit ok, and that’s it!
You don't have to do anything else.
While you’re sat on your lazy asses you're helping to cure cancer and other nasty things.
Let’s see how much data we can crunch, we have enough members to do extremely well!
Click here: http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=42864 for our statistics. (it will grow as we get more people folding!) The member’s part will update and list everyone who finished a task and uploads the info back. This happens automatically.
For more info on Folding go to http://folding.stanford.edu/
Issues -
* Some games will boot you back to desktop if you don't pause then quit the folding program.
* WU Finishing times can get silly, some will say it will take months to complete. Ignore it, the time will go down eventually. If after a few days it doesn't reboot the prog.
* You will only appear on the team table once a work unit has been completed. (Give it a few hours once a WU is done to appear)

I think the Doom Community could boost this a lot too, which is why I made a team called “The Doom Community”
Our team number is 45070, and our statistics page is here.
Let’s show the world what Doomers United can do :p |

I have been doing the Seti@home for almost 6 years.
Once they switch over to Boinc then I will start up some form of medical research.

Thanks for the Sticky and the formatting corrections, plus all the support! I also hope this turns into a big thing, because I know some people who died of cancer, and I don't want that to happen to anyone else. |

This is a fantastic idea and urge all doomers to get behind this! Having my dad die of cancer and watching 2 other family members go through cancer treatment makes this an issue I have very strong connections with. Watching someone you love going through cancer treatment is the toughest times you will ever experience, something I would not wish on anyone. If this research one day leads to the cure of cancer, and other such diseases, could only make the world a better place to live in. |

I don't see how the Doom community has Doomworld.com as the homepage. Regardless, it's running now. |

I know I'm gonna be in it.
Even though I don't directly support the cause, I do very much support the idea of donating extra processing power to organizations as long as they're not against my beliefs. |

yeah, that information its not enough for me to trust a program that downloads codes, works on them and sends em back, without me even noticing, Id rather download large files on my other computer, turn the program on so that it works on them and send em later. |

When protiens are made, they fold to make other ones. When they mess up, you get diseases like Cancer. This program simulates a fold (which fold you get is determined by the Standford University Server), and sends the results to Standford University. They use that data to do research on many, many, diseases and their cures. It really DOES help, and by running that small program, you save lives =d |
