Hello!

I experience strange random pitch sounds when I play under Windows XP. Though other source ports like GZDoom or ZDoom or Zandro don't pitch sounds randomly. Neither under XP, nor under Win 8.1.

Under Win 8.1 if I turn on "random pitch variations", it has no effect at all, sounds are always normal. Regardless of that setting.

Under XP if I turn off "random pitch variations", it has no effect at all, sounds are always randomly pitched. Regardless of that setting.

Does this phenomenon have something to do with sound drivers or what? I don't know and I'm totally baffled.

Here are two sound samples:

How is that "random pitch variations" setting supposed to work at all?

The random pitched sounds came from original Heretic (and Hexen). Here Heretic gameplay with pitched sound.
In ZDaemon it's not active for Doom games. It doesn't care if the setting is on or off.
It should also not depend on the operating system (Win 8.1, XP), it's calculated by the ZDaemon engine.

Well, I'm not quite sure what is going on here, but I tested it with Heretic too and it works the same way as I had described earlier.

I use the latest versions of ZDaemon on both systems.

Another strange thing I have noticed under XP.

If I turn off the "3D sound" then random pitch effect is also turned off.

Under 8.1 this has no effect on sound pitch. It is always the same regardless of 3D sound setting.

Hi again!

Let me reverse the question:

I have 3D sound and randomized pitch sounds turned on in Windows 8.1 too, but to no avail because pitching doesn't work at all. All sounds seem to be normal. Why can't I turn this function on in Windows 8.1?

All the other source ports work as they should regarding to the randomized pitches.

Normally it makes no sense to activate Random Pitch Variations in Doom, because original Doom does not have that function.
Only Heretic and Hexen have.
Not good is, it's in the sound menu in Doom and has no effect.
So if people want to activate it why not.

How it works at the moment:
- You can set Random Pitch Variations individually for Doom, Heretic and Hexen.
- In Doom it's disabled.

Changes for 1.10.11:
- If activated in Doom it will also work there.
- Announcer and taunts will never be pitched.

That is absolutely logical and acceptable.

I'm curious about how this change will affect the behaviour in XP.

But anyway, thanks for fixing it.

It works perfectly, but a bit moderately. Though it works in XP only if 3D sound is off.

If it is on, the range of these pitch variations is much higher than normal, and it doesn't happen totally randomly but it is related to the player's movement and speed as well.

Retracing your steps means lower pitches with strange crackling sounds, running backwards generates even more crackling sounds.

Running forwards means higher pitches, and causes ridiculous sound effects.

Were there any similar bugs by other source ports as well?

I have read another topic here that is about a loud cracking sound. Have we known yet what caused that? Maybe it could help solve this.

OK I give you other sound samples.

The pitch is ridiculously changing also while it is playing only one sample.

Cracks are also weird. It happens mainly if I run backwards.

So I can randomly change the pitch with my movements. LOL
