|
|
Since ZLauncher/ZIRC doesn't have any method of browsing my chat logs, I often find myself having to manually sort through thousands of text files to find a particular conversation I've previously had. Is there some way you guys can do one of two things:
1. Provide a built-in log browser that allows me to filter my logs to help me find what I need?
2. Provide an option to write logs to the chatlog directory according to some directory structure (Like username/network/window/date)?
Thanks. And please.

You can use Windows File Search to find a word or phrase in a file.
Just go to the log files directory, search for *.log and enter a word or phrase.
Looks different in Win7 |

Even if there are programs for searching, renaming each file would be a daunting task. The way the files are named are kinda lame, and it'd be nice to be able to make it save it as a different format of my choice. |

What do you mean renaming the files?
That was never indicated.
The naming is as follows:
date-nickname-address-tab.log
Though -tab will only appear for non-server tabs.
That is just fine.
Just describing it as "lame" is completely unhelpful, not to mention intensely irritating.
You can choose the format you want the logs saved as, you're given the option in the ZRC Settings -> Logging tab in the Format combobox:
Plain Text
UTF-8 Text
Unicode Text

i usually use the 'stupid' windows search when i am browsing the logs.
when you are looking for a particular set of files you can just enter separate keyword in the filename search: e.g. i want to see all logs with eq from 2011 i type '2011 earthquake'. if you want to search for keywords inside the file you can do the thing krawa mentioned. you can even combine it with the filename search i explained.
for searching inside the logs i have cygwin installed and use grep. its a bit more flexible than the windows search. |

I believe she means naming convention, not format. The way the files are named makes it somewhat inconvenient for sorting purposes. For example, you can't sort the files by nick.
The files are named like: 2012-02-15-kilgore-irc.zdaemon.org-Raider.log
If it were named: kilgore-irc.zdaemon.org-Raider-2012-02-15.log it could be sorted easily by the nick. I think she's suggesting an option that lets the user decide how the files will be named.
Irssi and other clients have such an option. The way my irclogs are organized is first saved to the following directory: ~/irclogs/2012/zdirc/
The files are named like this: kilgore.02-12.log

This is being looked into.
Related to (2) though, not (1). |

Might I add a suggestion here for option 2...
Some applications, let's say music ripping software, have a text field where you may actually enter your own directory format using something similar to variables. An couple examples from the Fre:ac program I use:
Code: | "<artist>\<album>\<title>"
"<artist>\<artist> - <title>"
"<artist> - <album>\<track> - <title>" |
Something like this would provide the ultimate flexibility. It's just a matter of deciding upon a few "variables", say username, network, window (channel/nick), date and having the text field simply be the path structure to use in the chatlogs directory. Anything not a variable is considered part of the file path/name pattern.
As an additional feature, perhaps there could be a command button to actually launch an explorer window to the chatlogs directory, so I can immediately access them to look around.
All this should be relatively simple to do. |

Done.
You can find it on the latest ZRC. Don't ask for more log extravaganza though; enough is enough. |
