If u shoot a barrel and ur opponent dies,
u shouldnt get a frag/point ...
This isnt good for wads like "Barrels of Fun":
The idea is, that u are a barrel hidin between other barrels
waitin for ur opponent to betray himself by movin.
But u dont need to wait!
You just need to run and spam thru the map:
the barrels will do their job and get u at least 1 frag.-
Thats lame.
Its an indirect kill, that shouldnt be count as +1 frag!
(Instead it should count -1 frag for the victim.)
What do u think?

Barrel kills are good. You shoot the barrels and use their explosion as a tool to frag other players. The survivor should be rewarded with frags for using that tool effectively. Barrels are hazards in the map that anyone can use and be rewarded with frags for using.
They add another layer of strategy when deathmatching in Episode 1 of Doom. Removing them would completely ruin stuff like barrofun.wad which makes all the player sprites look like barrels. Often, you have to guess where other players are hiding by firing into a pack of barrels and hope to frag someone. |

ofc, u can and shall kill ppl usin barrels ...
but u dont deserve a frag/score for that!-
as u said: its an environmental thing as slime, lava or abyss!
And u dont get a frag, if someone falls into that stuff, too.
Instead ur opponent loses 1 frag!-
This is strategy then! |

After reading the thread title alone, I was fully convinced that you'd truly gone 'Insane' and was on my way to deliver my own brand of ECT. But of course there is no way in hell that anyone would ever approve something so ridiculous

Four things:
- That's Doom.exe behaviour. You'd be unlikely to persuade the members of XXX that it should be altered, let alone the majority of the players.
- SharewareDM players would stick you headfirst into a barrel, and then roll you down some stairs on E1M9 and leave you adrift in a river of nukage.
- There are no other 'wads like Barrels of Fun'. Asking to get anything changed for the 'benefit' of one novelty mappack is never likely to happen.
- Do you really think that Milian somehow failed to realise that you could frag enemies in this way on BoF?

It adds a new dimension (someone used the word "strategy") to the game with -1 frag.
In SP/COOP its also no big deal ...if u get -1 frag, if u die by a barrel! thats even more challengin!
its just clumsy, if u stand next to an explodin barrel - like fallin in slime, lava or abyss.
(its also challengin, to try to avoid barrels while shootin on monsters,
to get a real frag.)
If u wanna think about things like this, u need to create extreme cases:
Imagin a map with many many barrels, that respawn fast enough ...
You wouldnt need to get any weapon or item now,
a smart player even needs his fists only to make one of the barrel explode
and use the cascade of explosions to get frags!-
What sense does this feature make then?
yes, the barrels can and shall be used to kill, but not the same way as a real weapon.
u almost used ur weapon, when u shot the barrel ...
ur chance to get a real frag is gone then!
(A weapon is a real weapon; a barrel is environment, that u cannot pickUp!)
Maybe it can be added as DMflag, an option
to decide between +1 frag for the shooter or -1 frag for the victim.

Hey guys you know what else needs to be fixed? Telefrag kills! I say the asshole who telefrags another player didn't use any skill and as such they should receive a master ban immediately, and then we should report that person to the proper authorities so that they can be arrested. God damn telefraggers, you didn't even shoot me ffs!
Also people who use the bfg should receive capital punishment! YOU DAMN LAMERS! |

i think, ur fightin against ur own logic here!
if it doesnt belong to ur equipment,
u cannot "frag" (kill + get 1 point) with it.
if a player gets killed by the map-environment,
he usually gets -1 point.

If you think about it, barrel frags can take as much skill as telefragging... most veteran players stay away from barrels making them difficult to frag with a barrel.
Not to mention the satisfaction of blowing someone away |

Barrel-Frags are süperfantastic and getting a Kill by doing so is just YAY! Just stay away from the Barrel if you do not like being fragged like that |

I can understand where you're coming from but, as Madgunner, pointed out then what about telefrags? And getting SP 'kills' from monster infighting is ok too?
Oh, and there is a good deal of skill involved in gaining a barrelfrag. Y'know, as opposed to simply spawning nearest to a sphere or a BFG and getting 'free' kills, which requires next-to-none.
If it helps then think of the barrels as 'player-activated mines'
Also, I am now really eager to play Worst's ACS-coded Donkey Kong! |

Thats an interestin fact for mappers!
A telefrag is different, i think ...
u are usin ur body (not environment) instead of a weapon,
but thats the only indirect-kill (i can think of),
which deserves a frag/point.-
To avoid this, mappers can set 2 (or more) teleport-exits;
the engine should choose between them randomly,
which lowers the chance for telefrags. |
