It's a tough choice. I can narrow it down to my top 3; Mother, which I'm sure very few people have heard of, American Beauty, (which is getting some mentions I see!), and My Cousin Vinny.

on a side note who made fistful of doom? its a great wad and it would be good to see some more levels
Go check the text file maybe?
But yeah, it is a classic for either SP/Co-op or FFA and it's such a fresh theme in Doom that I always wanted to do something with it
I'm going to be watching No country for old men soon, can anyone give me a thumbs up or down on it?
I'd give it a 9/10. It's my favourite film from last year so definitely. But then again it depends on what type of film goer you are. When i saw it in the theaters with a couple of friends they both found it boring, while i found it to be non stop entertainment and had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through.

I think that score gives a reasonably fair reflection of the film, although i am more inclined to give it 8.5. You get the basic jist of it though; its a quality film. Central to the main story arcs, are the underlying philosophical issues, something that perhaps the average (and by average i mean people who don't care to much about critque/reviewing/depth etc) movie goer might misenterpret (perhaps like whiteys friends) or not quite pickup. But beyond that is the excellent screenplay and dialogue (which you expect with the coen brothers anyway), this is enough to engage anyone.
Loved the ending as well (subtle but powerful).
Ill try and whip you up an "objective as possible" review quik, as soon as im done with a few others i got on at the moment.
Okay, explain the ending, VK. I don't understand, why did the coolest mf'er die first? And why wasn't there a part where the psycho gets incredibly pwnt somehow?
Hehe, these are the underlying philosophical issues that i mentioned previously. First off, ill let you try and have a little think about it yourself. The issues themselves are not especially difficult to establish or comprehend (although you do have to think hard, and even i missed the odd symbolic point), its what lies beyond these moral and philosophical questions that provides the real depth. To a certain degree its how you apply your own belief system to these questions, and this in turn will have an impact on how you percieve them, and the film as a whole. Of course the directors had their own, direct message to portray here, and that is certaintly not lost within the confounds of the film.
Just remember to think the title of the film through and pay close attention to the dialogue, especially the final scenes. Also, it might be worth your time to watch this film a few times, something you have indeed inspired me to do again
If you still feel like your struggling to grasp it all, give me a pm and ill glady explain my theories (and vice-versa), as i don't want to spoil it for others who might be intending to watch it.
Im going to change my min on the rating. This is a golden film in age of cinematic recession. Beyond the symbology, philosophy and metaphorical undercurrents; this is a film that makes you think, both in what the directors are trying to portray and what these messages mean to yourself. 9/10, originally given by Whitey is more than fair, so ill stick with it, unless of course i change my min again when i watch it once mor
ahhh all those words!! my turn :)
No Country For Old Men is a coen brothers movie. you can expect streams of naturalistic violence, simpleton characters and plot that converges into a catastrophic mess, one absurd and tragic misshappen at a time. it's THE movie of the last year, along with Stardust.
on the other hand, you can clearly see 'the imdb effect' around it. a greatly hyped movie enters the cinemas and everybody goes batshit loco with clicking 10s. it starts somewhere top25 and with time it slides very slowly downwards. it's not THAT good. it resembles Fargo /another coen brothers movie i already mentioned :)/ too much. take fargo, move it from north dakota to texas, change the absurdly epic music to dropdead silence and voila, you get NCFOM.
I have to disagree, i think it is THAT good (although this is especially hightened, admittedly, by the poor state of recent cinematic releases). There is more beyond the surface of the film that people seem to judge it off. Of course there is each to their own, and hype certaintly plays a part, but if your imlpying that my judgement is based off a bunch ratings given on one of the most annoying sites on the internet, you're seriously misguided.
I've briefly explained my reasons as to why this is such a quality film (even though 4 oscars paints its own picture), and im willing to expand my literature on it, just not here, at the expense of ruining the film for someone.
Fargo you say? If you weren't aware already, this film was adapted from a book, and I highly doubt there is any direct connection between the two (i don't see any, apart from a few surface resemblences), other than the fact that the stylistic qualities, because there from the same directors, are going to be similar.
yea, a friend told me the adaptation is very precise. don't get me wrong, the movie is brilliant and everything just clicks, but:
1. i was disappointed by last cca 15-20min segment.
1-a: the shortcut style after the mexicans hit on llewelyn left me wondering if they ran out of planned time and had to wrap the rest as soon as possible. i'm told the book isn't that rushed at the end.
1-b: yet, the ultrafast conclusion is followed by a totally nonsensical 'plottwist', i won't spoil it here, but that particular scene was just too absurd even for a coen brothers movie. i know it's taken from the book, but i'd throw the book away after reading that. talk about non sequitur. even it's logic is wrong, this one scene ruins it for me. it's like if deckard and rachel opened the elevator and a stampede of pink elephants ran out, with yakety yak for soundtrack :p i'm perfectly ok with tommy lee pondering scene, though :)
2. Fargo is superior and i still think there's a large resemblance. i also like Big Lebowski more overall, but i wouldn't want to compare those two. i'm fine with NCFOM in top250, but i don't agree with it being higher than these two coen flicks.
EDIT: i do agree there's a drop in movies quality lately. or maybe we're just spoiled by the cca '95-'01 era that saw an incredible amount of witty original production. in my personal opinion it's because hollywood accentuates blockbusters more. the perfect example would be nolan - dark knight is an awesome and fun movie, but it's the fuckin memento guy doing a summer hit.
there are still gems in the dirt, but you have to dig deeper for them :) let's say.. nick cave's australian western The Proposition with godly emily watson /i still haven't seen assassination of jesse james :(/, aronofsky's audiovisual orgy The Fountain /the douchebags at the academy didn't even nominate it for the best score, heh/, del toro's alicesque pan's labyrinth which went straight into my personal top10, or my recent discovery, tarsem's The Fall which IS as good as the trailer :)
Well Dew, i think ill pm you and we can share thoughts on this with no fear of spoiling it for others
Just for the record; I loath imdb's rating system. It gets far to much credit for what it deserves, and by no means does it represent the true accuracy of a film (although my friend seems to think so ). No, we have critical reviewers for that.
When i said "i think it is THAT good", i was referring to the notion that i do think its a brillaint film, not that its good enough to be in the top 25...
Anyway, yes dew, i woul agree with you on that "gems in the dirt" summary.
Yes, although Nolan has somewhat phased himself into the "hollywood" sector, its better to have such creative talent on a commerical level, than to be stuck with idiots like Bay, Yuen or Anderson (although Event horizon was a decent flick to his lowly credit). Del toro is another example, Pans labrinyth was a classic piece of independent film making, yet he has now made the transition to commericialismn (Hellboy 2).
Its whatever way you look at it; a glass half full, or a glass half empty... ; )
Well I'll tell both you and Vampire knight this. The weapons that (shugar ???) used were like the two most unused yet awesomely powerful weapons I've ever seen. A pressurized container with a hose to shoot out door locks / foreheads, and a heavily silenced 12 guage. I mean thats pretty wicked. And his just lack of remorse and the fact that he almost prides himself on his homicidal tendancies is just so thrilling. I mean in a few scenes I would have picked him as my #1 scariest villian.

he indeed was one of if not THE scariest villain i've ever seen, the scene with the air gun thing when he just puts it up agaisnt the poor guy's forehead is something i would gladly skip in subsequent runs of the movie - anyway, my pick of best 3(i can't pick just one):

Hotel Rwanda
American History X
12 Angry Men
12 angry men is a great film and one that is certaintly in my top 10 of all time. I also think its hugely underrated in this modern cinematic climate.
For anyone who doesn't know what the films about, ill give a quick synopsis of it. The 12 men in the title refer to 12 people who are on jury duty on a particular case. Henry Fonda stars as the lone jurer with a difference of opinion and attitude towards the defendant, in regards to the other 11 individuals; who seem set in their stubborn ways.
The key to the movie is watching how the story unfolds and develops, its as simple as that. The dialogue, character development and screeenplay is of the highest quality, and i would recommend it to anyone who appreicates these values in a film.

Ugh man and that sound of the silenced shotgun still makes me squirm. Its like the sound of asuper soaker almost out of water and it sprays instead of streams, except it sprays body mutilating death.
