|
|
Since people keep insisting that there should be a ZDS on the subject, and at least one person (Stereoface) has insisted that there should be a tournament, I'm thinking of organising one. I'd like to hear the thoughts and opinions on the matter (what maps; score, player and time limits; EU, US, AU demand, etc.) of anyone who tends to frequent this section. It's true that a lot of the maps in the n00b pack have been revised substantially in the past, and may not be completely stable, but people still ask after it, so I figure it should be tried, ja?
(Note: I've not contacted any server hosts about this idea yet.)
For those not familiar with Deathball, it's a variant form of CTF where one flag in the middle of the map has to be taken to a special scoring zone in the depths of the enemy base. This is much like Bombing Run in Unreal Tournament, or Rugby with SSGs. Upon scoring, the player dies. Tests so far have concentrated on smaller team sizes and rarely gone above 4vs4. Deathball has been demonstrated as suitable for 1-on-1 duels, however, and is much more action-based than CTF when such a game is the style engaged.
List of Maps Probably Worth Considering
n00b_deathball_f
map01 - Pokey Things by Adereth (the one with small elevators in front of the scoring zones)
map02 - In The New Machine by Adereth (weird mechanical skybox)
map03 - Mount Rocky Place by Adereth (mines)
map04 - Three A Three E by Cybershark (green marble and brightly-coloured bases; teleporters and berserk packs)
map06 - Tower of Excuses by Adereth (elevator up to the middle, buttons that open both scoring zones)
map07 - Horizon Archipelago by Adereth (Similar to Floating City by Alexmax and Sunday Afternoon II by Izm)
map08 - Da Stink by Adereth (sewers, BFGs--may actually be a horrible idea)
map09 - Lost Ground by Adereth (green marble, destroyed floor in middle of map, coy teleporter tricks, lots of broken things everywhere)
map10 - Acid Broke by Cybershark (press button for ball, awesome soundtrack)
olio_a1m
map11 - Deathball Championship by Nestea (sports field, two scoring zones per team)
map12 - Top of the World by Stewboy (everything dark, lots of falling off of the map, soulspheres)
map13 - Party's Over by Adereth (long not-so-narrow-any-more stucco and brownish metal outside, flag posts at each end)
map16 - Wolfenkugel by Cybershark (Wolfenstein map, xbox hueg)
map17 - Thirty Six by Adereth (dark textures, lots of crates, some weird teleporter tricks)
map19 - DoodsBal! by Kayer (Episode 1 style, lots of complex tricks and traps)
map20 - Seven Drunken Maps by Adereth (big, gray, and probably unplayable)
map21 - Lipan Conjuring by Spacepirate (may have a few relatives in CrazyCTF)
map22 - Ballotron512 by Cybershark (Tron-style in your computer!)
map24 - Death by Ball by Barbapapa (lots of warning stripes)
map25 - Kingdom of Floating by Barbapapa (sewers and skewers of marine heads)
map26 - Op-Cow's Minc 1 by Op-Cow (big audience up in the sky, grey green and brown, nothing vertical)
map27 - Op-Cow's Minc 2 by Op-Cow (big audience up in the sky, jump pads!)
map28 - The Office Ball by Cybershark (office buildings, teleport-to-score, triangular middle)

ooh, cool idea!
but yeah, i'm still hesitant to run it on ZDS just yet as there are still so many patchy maps - that and i have a couple of newer ones and revisions i'd still like to throw into the mix.
also saying "we want deathball" isn't all that helpful when there's already the two packs. although the n00b pack wouldn't really stand up too well with 8 players (which is the lowest Bones likes to run the ZDSes).
some of those maps are definitely worth some serious competitive play though so yeah, let's figure out some maps, numbers and then teams and servers! |

Ad I've never had the pleasure of playing deathball, but I've heard it's a lot of fun. I know I could get a whole bunch of euro players that would take part, I know I would. |

never Thad?
wow. but then i guess it hasn't had enough Euro exposure. anyways, as a result of Adereth's thread and too much coffee one night i revised the whole Olio pack and added a new map too. Adi still has to add some credits n'stuff but it'll be good to go shortly - and after the asskicking i gave it i'll be quite happy to run it on ZDS next time CTF comes around. |

I like Deathball, and it would be nice if it was played more in North America. The variety on the n00b servers is nice, but it's just too laggy. |

Deathball, eh? As many others have stated above, I, too, have not yet had the opportunity to play a game of "deathball." Tell me, Addy; how well does this currently run? Is it buggy, choppy, fucking gay ect.? 1.09 LIVES IN THE SPIRITS OF ALL! |

It runs nearly flawlessly. The only potential trouble is that there's a very small chance a score attempt will fail, because the bottom of the pit has to be populated by flag actors, and they don't always have enough of a radius to be scored against. We solved this by adding a small delay between hitting the floor and actually dying, which gives the player time to run around in the pit and hopefully crash into their flag before the reaper comes.
Other than that, though, it's extremely fast-paced and furious; like American football without any of the delays and with no passing, and it's much better for 1on1 or 2on2 than CTF, but still scales reasonably well. The larger number of things going on in a CTF game means that CTF games are suited to more players, since the different players can have different activities other than chasing after the game's sole ball, or defending the scoring zone, however. But, well, there's only one way to really test it. All you Klingons living in your grandma's house, grab your back street friend and get loud. |
