That wad is using the old ZDoom ZBridge actor that was taken from Hexen. The CustomBridge or InvisibleBridge actors are the proper bridge things to use in Doom.

http://zdoom.org/wiki/Category:Doom_II_bridges

If one really wanted to use the ZBridge actor, then they must include a new sprite to replace the "gross hack" sprite.

In the screenshot above, the sprites are floating above the lava. That itself implies that the map is in ZDoom-Hexen format with the ZBridge actors having a thing height set. From what I see, these are intended to serve as bridges in that screenshot. That screenshot is not of a vanilla-compatible map.

Why the "gross hack" sprites are appearing is indeterminable without looking at the wad. There could be a sprite naming conflict causing that sprite to appear, or it could be a mapping error -- a case where the author simply used the wrong type of bridge actor. One could use any of the other bridge actors, and they would not display that sprite. The ZBridge actor is for bridges that can display a user-defined sprite (by replacing the "gross hack" sprite). If you don't supply a sprite replacement, "gross hack" will appear.

In the meanwhile, I made a really simple patch which makes "gross hack" sprites invisible. Just load it on your server if you don't feel like messing around with this. Haven't actually tested the patch though.

Open map24 in Doom Builder and you'll see that there is no bridge objects or anything like that.

... Oh, I think I know what it is. When we played map18, worst used some "magic" to teleport us into area with guns and ammo. He also somehow gave us the yellow key. (That was the only way to beat this map with all the trolls around. If you ever seen this map, you'll understand.) Probably this bridge was another "anti-troll measure" (to stop people from shooting each other into lava).

Oh. Right.

Well if worst is involved, you can pretty much throw everything I said out the window, because he always finds a way to do crazy impossible shit like summoning bridges in-game. :p
