I was chatting to Kilgore the other day, and he was saying how much he would like to see some newschool maps made for 1on1 rather than just FFA, vertical maps in particular, he showed me a couple of examples http://www.mapraider.com/maps/?fileid=2369 and http://www.mapraider.com/maps/?fileid=1601 of the type of maps he'd like.

For all the work he's done on ZDaemon over the years I would really like to see this done for him. If you guys fancy the challange of doing this, either singulary or as a team effort, the map voted the best will be used in a trial newschool 1 on 1 tournament, if the tourney is a success and we have good maps to use we will hold more. Maps should be made for jump and freelook, also you can use weapons mods and skins.

I have faith that the communities new school mappers can rise to the challange, and i'm looking forward to seeing the results, lets see what you can do Very Happy

I don't quite understand either... I can't really tell what he wants by looking at an UT2K map... What's he looking for in a newschool map? ZDoom features?

I was planning some vertical 1on1 maps (in the style of judas/ledges), so it was funny that you mentioned this. Smile

I'd like to make a contribution. However, I hardly play any 1-on-1, so it would suck gameplay-wise, i guess, cause I have no deeper "insight" into that gamestyle.

To be honest, I don't have the slightest clue about new ZDoom features and personally I don't care at all about detailing; it could have a single no-detail texture throughout and it would be perfectly fine with me. I was mostly thinking in terms of high speed, vertical gameplay with jumppads, air control and such. The gameplay could get a bit difficult given that the ZDaemon speed is quite higher than say UT or Q3; it's not impossible though; we've been playing UT2K4 at 130% speed (to bring it closer to ZDaemon's speed) and it's quite playable. Just think of it as an experiment about gameplay possibilities; nothing more. It's hard to tell in advance if such a thing would make for an interesting gameplay or not.

As for Sam making it public, I thank her for that, but I'm also embarrassed; I don't want to impose anything on anyone. If some map author finds such an experiment intriguing, I'd be glad to help in any way I can.

You told it to all of them?

Crap, no need for me to put effort in it if anyone else is already gonna make those maps. :\

It's not a competition, does it matter if more than one map is made? Besides I didn't know you were working on any, but regardless, I agree with Kilgore we should have more new school 1on1 maps.

Told me aswell. Wink

It would be good if a number of maps were made, maybe putting them into a pack.

halogen.wad by Exl is very good for 1 on 1's, not very vertical though.

And it's certainly not newschool. Newschool has things that go a bit beyond Doom's standard egoguns gameplay; stuff like jumppads and the like that somebody said a few posts back.

But its chock-full of detail, I thought that accounted for some newschool, guess not. Confused

Probably along the lines of: ZDoom features, scripting, weapons mods, and built for mouselook/jumping. Basically stuff like TLSD, Cybercrime, CrimsonB5 etc. but for 1on1. But also from a gameplay perspective, eg. jump pads, underwater, low gravity, 3D bridges, etc. plus stuff you can only reach by jumping. (the vertical bobbing bug will be fixed in 1.07 afaik)

/me votes a resounding yes Very Happy

Actually I am not much in favor of new weapons or modifyng existing ones; that probably changes the game more than most people are used to; I was thinking mostly about gameplay (high connectivity, vertical variation, high speed, jumping, jumppads, etc), but yeah.. all this talk is good since it stimulates ideas.

I think this is needed now, particularly for the tournaments. (re: disappearing noweaponswitch, crosshairs etc. in 1on1)
