For those of you who don't know, Diablo 3 was released yesterday after a 12 year wait.

For those of you who do (and who bought it), what are your thoughts?

I have played a little bit and it looks very promising so far!

It appears to me they have totally trashed the gameplay formulae which made Diablo 1 & 2 so special for me. The skill system (effectively no more basic attack, WTF?), character progression, combat, potion system, it's all been revamped (read: dumbed down). For me, the two worst additions are the auction house and health pickup system.

That aside, I am not amused how they are asking everyone to pay $60 for a cardboard box. There is total reliance on Blizzard's servers to create even a save game file. Preposterous. It really looks like World of Diablocraft: Blizzard Needs More Money Edition.

As a massive (massive) Diablo fan, I will probably never buy this game. I still get so much fun playing the original games even in this day and age anyway.
*boots up original Diablo + custom mods*

I see where you guys are getting at about Diablo 2 to 3 but I really like the new diablo, the new additions like achievements, online play have made it easy to socialise on it. They have definitely influenced alot of WoW in the game in it but I've always found WoW skills/graphics beautiful so I think they did a good job with that. If you guys treat it like a whole new game and not an expansion to Diablo you may like it alot more! Plus in some ways it's like WoW but without all the huge amounts of dedicated time Smile.

Blizzard actually does need more money, due to recent subscriber count from WoW dropping from the millions in the last few months, they actually laid off about 600 workers - one of which included my brother sadly enough. So it's not surprise that something like this would pop up and be used as a monopoly scheme to get more money.

I'm personally going to wait a few years for the price to drop, then I'll give it a go.

I won't be a sucker for a brand new game price tag again.

Also, I *know* he's the title character, but for God's sake, do we *really* have to kill Diablo a *third* time?? After the conclusion of the second game, it seemed like they could have wrote any kind of story they wanted for a third game.

I know nothing about the games story. That just looks like the direction its taking.

Oh well, I'll play it eventually. I have plenty of other things to keep me busy now, anyway.

If that is your philosophy, you might be waiting for a while. Smile Diablo 2 Battlechest was priced at USD 40 for about 10 years Laughing

In seriousness though, I do hope the price drops just so more players can experience this game. Yes, it has its flaws, but no game is perfect. I will have to say that this is THE ONLY modern game which has kept my interest for more than 20 hours... the CoDs and Battlefields of the world could not do that.

I'll have torchlight and torchlight 2 to satisfy my hack n slash rpg needs, should they arise, until then. Smile

You just have to watch for sales to pop up.... Less than a year after it came out, I saw Starcraft II for 30 bucks... At one rare point, around 20-25.... I'll be looking for the same with Diablo 3 and snatch it up when it does Wink

Speaking of which, I'm waiting for them to come out with the battlechest for SCII before I even touch that, either. lol

I actually disagree with you on this point. They made the skill system more basic, yes, but they basically do everything the skill system did before, just without the stupid "let me wait until i get the next skill item, then assign my points" stuff from diablo2. Diablo 2's skill system was broken, and they tried to fix it. This is the ultimate result, and it works really REALLY well.
Here's a team member talking about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=NVTVMqtmxPU
The rest of the gameplay formula is still rather quite there. Except for the world not being quite as random in most places as d2, it's actually a very similar game.

Ok, so you don't have to pay attention to having to walk around with 40 town portals, or send a portal to a friend in your multiplayer game to join you. Or half a dozen mundane things. PvP is yet to be implemented, but at least you won't have a lvl50 trying to join your lvl20 game to get your ear.
Btw, basic attack is still there. Remove your skill item from mouse1, and it will use your weapon (bow, staff, whatever. Some classes end up using the weapon as part of the attack anyway.)
I occasionally dislike the lack of mana-type pots, but it lets them vary the characters in how they use their resource, so it works really quite well. The health pickup system really can save your butt in a fight, but is largely there to let you recover after a fight without 1-burning a potion, or 2- going back to down to get healed. It's a great game mechanic, and I feel sorry for you if you can't get over that D2 is an old game with old mechanics, and that they can make a modern game more interesting if they drop pointless mechanics.

Lyfe sums up my opinion of many games that get ragged on nowadays with similar criticisms like being "dumbed down".
I think that phrase is just overused and it seems people don't even know what it means when they say it.

There's a difference between something being dumbed down or simply being streamlined and less tedious.

Lyfe mentions "old mechanics", and indeed, that's the case with many of the old games being revived lately, those old mechanics were simply tedious and there's nothing more or less "intelligent" about mechanics being streamlined.

I haven't played Diablo3 yet but it's the same ole' outcry from fans as with many revivals lately.

On another note, I agree that the "Always Online" requirement for Diablo3 is bullshit.

I agree 100% being from New Zealand and having to play in US West Coast server. i sometimes get disconnected for no reason what so ever ( never had this issue on any other game) even tho you to get keep your gear / stats its a pain having to run around the map a few times... REALLY FRUSTRATING.

At times its seems like an awesome game to play. but after having completed normal mode.. seems that doing the same thing over and over isn't that much fun for me at all :/.. i would of thought the maps would change like in D2.

Nice game but i am not sure if its worth the money that they are asking for...

PVP might change my view but have to see...
