ZDaemon might not be incredibly active in the public eye, but the game is still played a ton in separate communities. It's not wise to mention what this community is but it's still rather popular. For that matter, DooM is still pretty popular. Other ports have pretty large communities and development for several different doom ports is still taking place!

Some of the old faces you're used to seeing aren't gone, they're just not very active publicly. Sadly, this is not by choice though. There are silly things splitting two large and prominent communities in the ZDaemon world but it should be known that the truth is, they could probably not ever co-exist anyway.

Although, it would be nice if people could go where they please and not basically be forced into "picking a side."

Other than that, I have noticed an increased population in new, young players in both Skulltag and ZDaemon. These kids are the future of this game, so it's wise to be as nice as possible to keep them around! I wish things would have turned out differently so that there wasn't such large separation in communities in this game. Otherwise, it probably wouldn't appear to be so lifeless at times..

I can proudly say that I've managed to bring back some of Croatian doomers: Mihha, Biolio, Woodoo, Cezo, Inahan and few others. Last weekend we had 5x5 ZDaemon lan party. we sure will do more lan partys and tournaments. Demos and pictures will follow soon.

I still play CTF occasionally.

I also make a point of playing whenever I'm in a new foreign country. Can anyone top 7 countries?

Lots of old players are still around. Of course, you got to now where to look and see past the fake aliases.

Hey Gollum! In a nutshell, everyone has moved on due to one or both of these factors:

1 - They got banned for doing the wrong thing (cheating), saying the right thing (constructive criticism) or wrong thing (destructive criticism, rubbing an admin the wrong way).

2 - Virtually any player that only has a limited time to play and wants a good game will do so in the independent CTF or duel leagues that operate outside the "motherland" and scope of public servers.

Everyone else just idles in ZDirc or plays in public servers during the special event nights.

I think it was that bind sr-50 stuff, made people hard to hit. Is that stuff still going on. Time to install the old girl again and give her a go around.

i came here when i was 14, and it's been nearly a decade...

i play occasionally.

the best CTF games were 2005-2007. it's long gone folks. sometimes you wish things could be like they were in 1995 or 2004. i remember way back in 2005 when i played nearly constantly after coming home from highschool.

i recently got back into the x-files (thanks to amazon instant video). things seem so much simpler back then (because they were)...

today, people demand so much more from a game.

i'd say the iphone and android gaming action has pretty much sucked the air out of most "indie games" that would normally be played on a mac or pc... the one exception is minecraft

it's 11:40pm on Wednesday night, which was once a prime time...

there's 9 people playing and 2 bots.

There will always be dips, it happens.

There have been a few recent nights where the in-game player count has peaked at about 80-96 players.

Instead of the apparant doomsaying, just play the game.

Everyone chill out about t8's post! It's just his usual bi-annual doomsaying.
Also don't question his sound scientific methods to deduce the overall health of ZD from a single sample
(that always tends to be measured coincidentally around the daily minimum of player activity). Laughing

Lol @ his "scientific methods".

This for example. How the hell does he draw that conclusion? Where are the facts and figures behind it? Because all I ever see are the same old highly-populated ZDCTF servers as always...

I believe the Mayans predicted the end of ZD in 2012, did they not?

Considering Doom has been around for 18 years, I think it's an amazing fact that it has 3 very dedicated ports to it in ZDaemon, Skulltag and Odamex. Give. It another 18 years and I bet people will still remember / play Doom in some sort of way, which is more than I can say for Call of Duty 12 or whatever it is kids play nowadays. I'm just glad for one that I was brought up in the era of Doom, and we are one of the lucky few to really enjoy such an amazing and memorable game, as the next generation won't know what they've missed out on.
