Most of the other competitive multiplayer games have this - a deadly melee weapon in your inventory right after spawning. Me and Tobi experimented with chainsaw settings a bit, but the weapon felt overpowered (except the noise) and had to be picked up still.

Now Doom already has a perfect melee weapon - the berserked fist. It requires a level of finesse to hit another person with it, thanks to the insane speed of movement in this game, so it shouldn't even be overpowered. Just keep your distance, right?

Such a feature could provide an interesting twist to basically anything, because hugging the opponent would suddenly become deadlier. Say bye bye to all those SSG whores trying to run around you to maximize your swing radius!

Hasn't this already been addressed for the next release?

22. Extended the nice weapons dmflag to work in DM too: when it's enabled
    in DM, you spawn with a berserk in Doom or with the gauntlets in
    Heretic.


Or do you mean that the player should be permanently 'berserked'?

SharK: check item 199. It superceded item 22.

199. Modified the nice weapons dmflag to work in DM/TDM/CTF the same as in Coop mode.
We're thinking about adding another dmflag to do what dewww wants. There are games where you'd prefer spawning with an SG, and others where you'd prefer them to start with a berserk.
