Firstly let's all bring the presents, cards and booze - this week is Doom's birthday!

Now are we gonna play some E1 perhaps? Well no, we're not. Cuppy reminds me that last year we did 'Wonderful Doom' which was a lovely tribute to Ultimate Doom, the last co-op we did was pretty vanilla too so it's time for another break from that style. In fact it's not co-op at all this week. It's survival. Only it's sorta in a league of its own and rather than harking back to Doom.exe, it reminds us of how far Zdaemon has come from there.

This week is a crazy project that the XXX guys put together. It's the first megawad that has been specifically designed for survival on Zdaemon but still it pushes the envelope and turns it into survival/invasion. The maps are all quite radically differing but the constant is that monsters keep on spawning until there is only one player left standing. That person wins.

This is a very varied pack in terms of quality and that some maps are pure instinct while others play out like regular co-op maps, which I think is a bad idea personally. I'd have prefered to see either a hide & seek survival WAD or an all-action one, not a mix. Also I hate when people use SS guards in non-Wolf-themed maps, it looks lame!

But heh, it's generally great fun to play and so now it's finally out of its beta stages then that's what we're gonna do!

A very interesting mapset, I thought. I wasn't as impressed by the arena-style maps since they just seemed focused on how lucky you got by running around in a circle. The arenas with cover (buildings, rock formations, etc) in them were usually ok.

A few notable things:

05: Nice and tight layout. I played it back during the beta phases.
07: It's a very tricky map. Really <3 it though.
13: I likey. Jad and I had a good time on this trippy little venture.
14: OMG Laughing This was unbelievable with the specters on skill 5. Deathbringer ended up fixing the settings so we could complete it properly. That midi is just burned into my brain after playing so many times!
23: Cute map, almost a little too easy to survive.
26: I didn't care for this at all really.
27: Right out of X-Noob DM and it works really well. I had a blast running and hiding in those dark corridors.
28: The west side of the mine seemed a hell of a lot more dangerous than the east side. Razz Probably that was intentional.
29: Good I suppose. The monsters got pretty intense sometimes, but all that free health in the middle made it a little easy maybe.
30: It's a bit tough to figure out what it is you're supposed to do. The mirroring was unnecessary and caused the occasional HOM.
31: All kinds of awesome.

I played mostly the later maps. I'll have to catch up on the earlier ones sometime, too.
