So like, it's Toke's anniversary this week. We already ran most of his best stuff here - OMGmaps, Vexation (and also the Toke Tribute WAD) but even though it should kinda be co-op this week I still pretty much draw the line at running coopbuildlm. It's a testament to the guy that we will probably never have to either, as servers running it are seldom inactive for long.
What I did remember was a lesser known CTF pack of his - although after seeing a couple people mention it this week I see it's surprisingly better known than I thought. It's often rough to look at but all the basics are in here for some great (and fun) games. And no, there won't be any jumping this week, just the way Toke would want the maps played.
A cool treat was that the only version of this I ever saw was 'test5'. I went to search on Dogsoft for a link to it and turned up a 'test10' which has more maps! The DW5M1 copy is out - which is no loss as there are plenty of those - and there's some all new stuff which I never saw before Also included in the week's server setup are the man's own music pack and his skins.

As much as I would love to put this up, I do not think I can from now on in my current location AND on a mac computer. I will see what I can do though! |

Hmmm, somehow I was expecting a little bit more enthousiasm for this session. Oh well, we'll see how this session will flow tonight I guess. |

Thanks man, you saved our bacon there
Epic games in the US last night - and even better, Qwaszx returned!
This WAD really should have permanent hosting as there are some really slick layouts in there. Plus, y'know, what other mappack has a saws and fists map?! |

They were all pretty well-crafted. A few weak spots, though: map10 was just too huge and you'd need 6 vs 6 for anything decent to happen here. Map11 was just a bunch of hallways and a lot of camping went on in the soulsphere rooms + I could never tell which way I was supposed to go in order to get out of my base. The sequestered armory in map13 was just awkward. When there was an enemy or two hanging around there, my entire team would be without guns as we were being robbed.
One thing about a large slice of Toke's maps was that they had an excessive amount of something (lots of health present in this pack, spamming, monsters, and even little things like that map with all of the backpacks) or some funky eccentricities. Coopbuild and OMGMaps both seemed to be cut from the same cloth in this sense. Sometimes he just missed the mark with some of his extreme design choices. The aforementioned wads both had their moments but projects like Vexation and 'Toke CTF' are a little more consistent in quality.
Toke was an accomplished designer. His wads always had a solid chunk of maps that were just unforgettable. Influential is the word. |

Um, actually, I quite enjoyed the fact that there were so many medikits laying around. Having a constant supply of health, meant you could get back on your feet quicker. However, some of the maps either had centralized weapon caches, not enough weapons, or just awkward weapon placement.
Overall, I think I would enjoy this pack much more than I would with zdctfmp. It's a fine set of maps, and it proves Toke was a god when it came to layouts. |
