Something old, something new! Another week, another revolutionary ZDS setup!
Two things often bug me when trying to pick out WADs to run for ZDS. One is that there's some great stuff out there which just doesn't have enough maps to make a whole session - particularly for FFA, where cames can be brutally short. The other is that nice as it'd be to get the whole of #zdplayers into a server on the night, many of the maps won't realistically hold more than 8 players.
This week somebody bugged me about such a WAD again, just as I was thinking about a similar case and how we do seem to have a multitude of server hosts these days. And lo, it came to pass that I had an epiphany which went something like "LET'S FREAKIN' WELL RUN THEM BOTH!!111111"
The first part of this double-decker is X-noob_DM which is a fun pack created by the XXX clan. Some of the maps are très noobish but they're mixed in with others which are more mature and a couple which are great for saying how little the authors had mapped before. It will be accompanied by a vox and skins that the clan made too.
All seems only fair as Krawa gives us a server every week
For the other half, I was going to go with something else even more recent but I figure that can wait a bit longer while we go with a WAD that Boner reminded me of - Vicious Circles. It plain slipped off the L@P FFA servers and so I once ran it for a while when I had admin over some of the CHiP servers. Of particular interest to people is that these maps were made by two of the EXEC guys
Now I don't know quite how this sesh is going to work out in practice. One theory is that we play through one WAD and then move to the other when we're done (or bored). But if there are a decent number of players then perhaps we could kick off both servers at the same time and sorta swap over at half time or something? For now I'm thinking let's do X-noob_DM first and then move onto Vicious after an hour. Other suggestions are vvelcome!

Good idea. There are too many wads gathering dust at the bottom of everyone's folders that fall a few maps short of providing a full-length session. Now there is the modern marvel of the two-round ZDS. I'll have to pace myself and not get winded after the first event! |

Lol at the tomatoes.
And yeah I did check this crazy idea over with Cuppy before I posted it. I am sure Bones is still like "OMG WTF is he doing?!" though
BTW, I didn't have chance to address the server hosts in person yet.
@ Krawa: You already have an X-noob server up so I guess it's no biggie to just put up the Vicious one too - and hopefully you can modify and rename the X-noob for the day too.
@ Death: So liek can you put one on 3-BET and the other on NODE-3 or something? |

So yah, guess my dream of mass cross-server fragfests needs some work.
X-noob_DM was busy for a while but died down before we finished the rotation. Everyone came over to Vicious when we were done there which was cool, but as it was only like 5 of us and all just the regulars then what was the point really? I could've played something more epic during the week with all those guys.
But hey, the games were all good, particularly on Vicious. How did you other guys find playing on those maps? And y'know, was there much of a Euro session?
Star of the matches: MetalDefender - don't know him but he played most of the maps on both servers. Yay!

Mega-fisting award goes to vicious.wad for having those nice berserk packs stashed everywhere.
X-Noob DM had some amateurish texture work, but nothing really stood out to make it truly flawed. My favorites were Shark's map, that city level that Krawa made, and map09 (that one is just charming). I appreciated the BFG placement throughout the pack. One thing about this level set is that I never knew how to feel about spawn camping. I tend to avoid the practice on most DM maps as a courtesy to other players and to have more fun. However, spawn killing by way of rocket spam seemed to be encouraged on about a third of the maps or so.
Lots of tightly-wound maps in Vicious Circles. You can cover a lot of ground quickly as you weave through those snug corridors. They even took the first introductory map from Quake and scaled it down so as to make it fit with the other compact levels. There are a lot of yummy brown brick maps. Did I mention the berserks and saws? |
