I doubt it, i would think that just means that there is a lower density of people there than the US. |

Wow, what year was that.
My son was just in a few months ago for less than 24 hours and it was over 25,000.00
I hope your mom is doing ok now.

JKist: I used to share your opinion about private vs. public services; then I grew up and learned some more. For everyone who thinks that privatization is inherently good and nationalization is inherently evil, I'd suggest a quick study of the natural monopoly concept. After all, if we don't want public health care, why do we have public police? or prisons? or army? why not privatize all of them since privatization is so much better?
Hell.. didn't some folks try that idea with power companies? anyone remembers what happened in California some years ago? I also remember people arguing for privatization of prisons (because they were too cheap to pay for public ones: then they paid much more because of the increased crime caused by the inmates getting released or never admitted in the first place). Yeah... bright ideas.
The truth is... there is no hard and fast rule about which industries should be public, private, regulated, etc. It depends on a zillion factors and it's the job of the country's administration/goverment to figure out the best possible solution (even though that solution may be far from the theoretical optimum: there are always real-life constraints in the picture). What works for a given country at some time period may or may not work for another country/time period combination. |

Wow, why don't you come on up to Canada?
It's only a short drive and we have plenty of room for you.
Beyond the free health care, we've also got the best banking system in the world... no taxpayer bail outs here! |

I wouldn't say that exactly...
Sure, it's not like not being able to breath or having a heart attack, but if left untreated long enough, the patient can go into a stage known as irreversible shock from all of the internal bleeding of a broken bone and die. Especially being that in this case, the patient was an older woman. But as I said, welcome to E.Rs friends. o/ |
thats a fair call, but broken bones in a healthy person would hardly ever cause this..but its all dependent on the bone, the type of fracture and the condition of that persons health |

The reason why people with broken bones take longer in hospitals is because you can wait with a broken bone. Sure you might have some pain, but you can wait. There are sure to be more important injuries than your broken bone. I too had to wait 8 hours at 9pm to see a doctor when I tore my ACL. The reason behind this, people abuse the system and go to an emergency doctor when they have a simple cold, or something not worth going to a doctor for. |

As a medical student in the UK, I sympathise with your grandmother greatly. You should complain through the patient advice and liasons service (PALS).
However, I do think that many people in our country take the NHS system for granted. It is a boon...sure it may have some flaws, but bear in mind you are paying a pittance for it (through tax). It is in our nature to complain, but picture someone in a country with no free healthcare. If you cannot afford private health insurance (which FYI does not cover a lot of important conditions/accidents), then you are screwed. The less wealthy in countries like the USA have to sell their houses just to be able to afford chemotherapy. And tbh, private healthcare in the UK is not much better than the NHS with regards to the quality of medical treatment...sure you get seen quicker, and the post-op treatment is awesome, but these are just skin deep benefits. |

If you're prone to injury then private health care has its benefits. Since starting full time work in '06 I've been a member of the private healthcare service GB use called BUPA. I've had a lot of trouble with my back over the last 4 years or so and I've had plenty of treatment. I think around £42 a month is the cost but for a cripple like me it's been the dogs bollocks. A couple of MRI scans @ £350 a pop, chiropractic treatment @ £75 a pop (about 10 times I went) and also the treatment I had last year was around £300. I waited 2 days for my first appointment with the specialist and about 4 days to get the scan. Waiting time is minimal in private healthcare. I'm not sure about the emergency services because I think you have to pay for a private ambulance to pick you up (not covered in the price plan)
NHS needs sorting and has needed it for many years. MRSA still exists in hospitals and they've been trying to clear that for years. Nurses need a bit more pay to make the job attractive. We'll see what happens when the tories win the election :/ |

Hatred is right, free or not ER's in "certain" hospitals are staffed according to the type of stuff they usually deal with.
To add to that some hospitals aren't versed, trained or prepared to deal with random and frequent trauma victims. The are a few that are prepared to deal with a bunch of people coming in with random injuries and if you want to be stabilized quickly you go to those hospitals.
they even direct people to different hospitals according to there injuries because they know all hospitals weren't created equally. Interestingly enough its those public trauma centers that have great doctors that are versatile. Most other hospitals specialize in certain areas like heart disease, or orthopedics . If you take a gun shot victim there they wont be prepared to deal with it. Mind you they will eventually figure it out, but not as quickly as a trauma center.
Free...some people complain some don't. I go to hospitals sometimes and they will refuse to care for you until they run your papers that say you have insurance, meanwhile your dieing. Pretty ridiculous, just like the pharmaceutical industry in the united states. They have a medicine for like everything now. In order for it to work you have to residually use it for the rest of your life?... come on people...its all about the money here in the states and people try to fear monger the free health care idea and system. Yet countries like Cuba who is always talked about in bad light has one of the best health care systems in the world, not sure if its free or not but they per capita outshine everyone else as far as mortality rate and curing of disease.
Here in the US (until recently) they didn't allow certain stem cell research because of religious beliefs..psh even though church and state are supposed to be separate. Yet its one of the main driving factors behind a lot of what happens here. Not to mention unless your some rich silver spoon in the mouth mofo, or you have a good job with benefits your pretty much assed out as far as health care goes.
So don't down the free health care, down the management of it, think about the type of hospital you visited, was it suited to deal with a large amount of walk-ins? If you are familiar with ambulances they call in the hospital on route so they will be prepared to deal with the victim. I wish I got a phone call every time before something was going to happen with the network, giving me vivid details, I would be more of a network god. |
