Because for some it's skill, and for some people it's only fun. What's your problem?
Lack of competition. Don't get me wrong, there are many great players out there, and i respect the fact that they have taken time playing the game and bringing the level of gameplay to a new high. For me, i enjoy challenges, i like having a difficult game where you have to be at your best form to win.
However, I personally would like to see a new breed of players who are eager to learn and have an ambition for this game. Who could give some of us other Pro players more of a competition.
I enjoy the thrills out of being able to beat a top class player and it gives me more reason to practise the game and improve my skills. I find playing a game with someone on an equally high level of skill much more entertaining then playing just some average skilled player that you don't even have to try for to win.
Ok, then, give the n00bs some more time to develop their skills.
I don't think, it's a problem of chatting or being "distracted" by other things.
It's the same thing with all pastimes: most people just want to entertain themselves and don't have an ambition to develop their skills. But some do.
Those who want to improve, certainly won't loose their time in chats but play to reach their aim. But they're rare by nature. Even the more, as computer games, especially ego shooters, aren't a traditional kind of sport.
I used to consider myself highly skilled compared to most people around here. In fact, I'm almost positive I was better than 90% of the people who played ZD! Slowly, I stopped playing as often. Now I just show up occasionally in games.
It's not because I dont like to play anymore, because I really do. It's just that I have better things to do now. Not to mention the constant influx of idiots who are constantly playing public games. They are the main reason I dont like to play anymore.
Is talking more than playing really a crime? If so, arrest me and hang me for treason. Along with 300 other people. Not enough competition? Ah, well...as unfortunate as that is, it's not that hard to get a game with the apparently small amount of skilled players who still come around.
WeaponX: Sorry, I dont run tournaments to decide who's the best. I run them for fun.

Tournament Definition: A tournament is an organized competition in which many participants play each other in individual games. After each game, each participant is either dropped from the tournament, or advances to play a new opponent in the next "round." Usually, all the rounds of the tournament lead up to the "finals", in which the only remaining participants play, and the winner of the finals is the winner of the entire tournament
Winning the individual games in the tournaments is what makes it fun IMO. I've never noticed anyone on ZDaemon to have fun losing a game in a tournament.
That is the definition of a tournament in a dictionary. Sorry, dont try to tell me the reason behind why I run tournaments. Only _I_ know that. I run tournaments for fun. I've seen countless examples of people who were just thankful they got the chance to play the game. Not everyone goes batshit insane over a game.

Don't give out tournament definitions if you're going to be a complete asshat because you can't take a loss in a tournament well.
I don't think anybody really wants to lose a tournament game. I aint tryin to cause an arguement here, im just merely stating the level of competition over the years, especially in DeathMatch have gone downhill

I disagree that the level of competition has gone down. There's various things like IDL and ZDDL going on that, if anything, have skyrocketed it up higher than ever.
If by DeathMatch you mean Free For All, activity has gone down on that, but I still see FFAs go on all the time. I still don't see where you're getting your competitiveness info to cite that it's going downhill.
And no, it's not winning or losing in a tournament game, it's what you learn from the match that makes it fun. If you don't learn anything from your win/loss, you won't get any better, and that applies to everyone.
Sanger, dry your emo tears and read what I'm saying. I'm simply saying that the skill of the community sees a downfall because people aren't practicing as much as they used to - that's all.
Everyone can do as they please and I encourage them to follow in those steps. But, people like to play Doom at high levels. We don't care about getting anything out of this. As you play for fun, has it ever hit you that maybe playing DooM2 at competitive levels is fun for some people? Secondly, do you get government funds out of trolling around in zdirc either?
No, you don't. So, relax, take a chill pill, eat a dick, do something. You're taking too much offense to this when nobody ever said anything offensive.
People who don't play the game very often and spend most of their time chatting are noobs by definition. You can't be failry familiar with anything if you don't put time or dedication into it. It's really that simple.
So, once again, read what I've said and come back to me.

So how come everyone isn't complaining and making threads about other things that take away time from practicing? Oh sure, chatting takes away time from practicing, so does hanging out with friends, so does work, so does sleep. Hey, let's all chain ourselves to our computers and play Doom 24/7.
you're talking nonsense. but if you really need me to spell it out then people don't make threads about those things because they are outside of Zdaemon. the chat is here to facilitate the port, not the other way around.

I don't know what kind of friends you like to have, but I like to know a bit about mines, about what they're like outside of the computer. They're people first, players second.
no.
this is Zdaemon. if you want to get to know people first then you're using the wrong chat service. everyone here should be a player first (or conceivably just being a mapper would be ok too) but you get the idea? things that are related to Doom.
and of course i talk to friends (here) about stuff outside of Doom but i don't start by asking "A/S/L?" in #zdplayers.

The only reason for playing Doom (for me and for the vast majority of the players) is FUN.
ok, that was a neat summary.
as Xie explained it's no fun for people like him if they don't have challenging opponents.
now none of us are big 'competitive players' but would any of us consider it to still be fun finishing a series of FFA games with everyone else only scoring in the single digits?
Well, what I wanted to express: it's totally normal, that skilled players will have hard times to find people they can compete with, the higher their own skill is. This is the case in chess, and it's the case in snooker, tennis, ..., and any other sport or game. And it's also the case in computer games, and also in Doom.
The majority of players will ALWAYS be low-skilled for various reasons. They don't have the time, the equipment or even the ambition to improve. That's totally normal. The chatting isn't the reason, but only a symptome for this very normal fact.
I haven't any amibition to improve my skills in Doom. But I have them in chess, and I see the same problem. With a certain level of skill, it's hard to find a serious challenge. But this certainly will not change, when I call the easy players "n00bs" and tell them to spend more time with improving their skills. That's ridiculous.
I didn't want to reply anymore, but I honestly just can't believe how sad and pathetic some people really are.
Hatred, you're telling me to read what you have written, but you must've ignored my last post. I can tell, because you seem to have missed the part where I said that I was done with this. That still applies, so get over yourself.
But of course, in true troll fashion, you must beat the dead horse, and then sling insults, telling me to "dry your emo tears", and to "eat a dick". Pathetic. Here's a tip. Grow up, and then learn to give things a rest.
Is that too much for you? It's clear that arguing isn't going to do a goddamn thing anymore. If you have a problem with ZRC, you can either complain in this thread and troll more, or you can go take it up with the people who can actually change things. Go complain to the programmers, convince them to take it out of the launcher if it bothers you that much. As of now, let me say it again. I'm done with this.

That's Hatred alright.
Of course, zdirc is convinient. I remember back then with no irc, finding your friends online would be difficult. Now, I can find them, and we can play some games or so. On the flipside, it fails, just fails. Thank god for the banning system
And another problem of lack of skill. The noobs who play, usually camp and spam and stuff which get yelled at by people like me. Sometime, they get bored of it and play some coop. Then they get bored of that and hang around hqs and whatnot. Why people are mad at that? I will never know.
Sanger, it seems this has crushed your internet dreams. Allow me to make myself clear once again as it's evident that you don't understand what I've been saying this whole time.
First off, people who spend the majority of their time chatting rather than playing are going to be average players at best. You can't deny that nor have you responded to that yet.
Second: no, this is not a crusade to destroy your very beloved ZDirc and #zdplayers. It is a debate concerning the activity of this community and the effects ZRC has on it.
I take it you're some guy who started this game expecting to be one of the best from the start without any practice. Then, one day, to your dismay, you joined a server and got your ass handed to you and were probabaly called a noob several times during this event. Now, ever since then, your built up anger has grown and grown for people who actually practice and dedicate their time to be good at a game because that's what they enjoy. Your anger has taken control of you and you are making meaningless posts with no logic or good arguements behind them. Now, after this, you are going to be so enraged that you become the best player of all time and crush me for disagreeing with you publically.
Haha, relax man, it's only the internet!
P.S Oh, and DDoSbringer, erm, I mean, Deathbringer, you would know all about trolling, wouldn't you?
