Excellent stuff, bond Glad a release is, uh, released
Sounds like you have a few people requestion Linux binaries here, bond. Better get cracking
EDIT: oh my GOD I'M IN THE CHANGELOG!!! TY BOND <333333
Also @ danhen, a linux port as you may know is not just a simple recompilation of code, as some components use external dynamic libraries (GetWAD, zrc, etc.), and there is a lot of work that would need to be done with the GUI probably using GTK libraries, even though I'd use Qt, GTK is more popular and so is GNOME, it'd be a lot easier just using Wine right now. Make sure you always keep up to date with the latest releases of Wine (I'd not recomend using CVS at this time, as some patches released to Wine cause problems, which are not present in polished releases such as 0.9.27, 0.9.28, etc. Since *.17 I've noticed ZDaemon running full speed, and IDE working perfectly, so if you are under this version I'd recommend updating. |

Uhm which of the supported ports even work under Linux..? Or why would you want a Linux version? |

A Linux version of the launcher would be useful in many ways.
It can allow one to view and debug the server list nicely while being able to run an emergency game in wine when needed. I hate having to launch up vmware to get the real launcher working. IDE seems to do the job nicely by running in wine, but occasional problems do occur. A Linux version of IDE would surely be more "stable". Though, I have no idea how this is gonna be feasible, since AFAIK, IDE is not written in a portable toolkit like wxWidgets or GTK+.
On the other note... vmware is not compatible with FreeBSD |

Gnome is more popular then KDE? I think you have that backwards. Yes, GTK+ is a more popular widget set then QT but the only distributions that primarily support Gnome as far as I know are Redhat (Fedora) and Ubuntu. Most other distros support KDE as their primary desktop besides some light distros (which support blackbox, fluxbox, etc.)
Anyway, a native port of IDE would be helpful in many ways. ZDaemon itself runs in wine fine and I don't see any reason to install Windows just to play this game. I maintained a native launcher (gzlauncher) until the launcher protocol was closed but I can no longer maintain it as gzlauncher is open-source. I just want a functional launcher. |

Well apparently KDE is more popular, but in reality any linux user I talk to uses GNOME. I never got trying your launcher but screenshots showed that it looked good I know why you'd want it open source, but would it harm too much to have it closed and in use? We might as well have at least ONE native launcher |

Say, ever thought about temporarily closing the source of it (not using sourceforge for the mean time) and trying to just get it to work so there could be at least something to use? After all, something is better than nothing |

I got it to work through hacks but I refuse to release such a launcher. I messaged Raider and asked him if I could have the protocol information in exchange for the closing of my source for future releases until the protocol is again open. I have been in the ZDaemon community as long as ZDaemon has been available and I was in the CSDoom community before that. I was also part of the DoomServ community before it closed down as well. I don't think I am a threat to the integrity of ZDaemon. Regardless, I never received a reply. I take it that no answer is the same as a "no" answer.
If I were to release the launcher under a closed-source license I would need to rewrite some parts of the code. I would also have to get all new icons as those were provided by ZDaemon community members as GPL icons. Someone would have to be willing to "give" me all rights to some icons that they created as I am no artist. |
