YO, news from Slade, they released version 3.1.0 Beta 1.
I know, some hard-liner still use XWE*, but Slade3 also has great features.
Get it now: http://slade.mancubus.net/index.php?page=downloads
If you use Win don't forget to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 x86 Runtime first.
Changes:
Quote: | General:
- Added ability to open maps with Doom Builder 2 (if it is installed)
- Added console commands to list/set cvars

- Removed the maps list from the open archives tab on the archive manager
- Merged the Archives and Recent Files tabs into one
- Implemented a custom toolbar, replacing the ugly wxAUI ones
- Implemented notebook tab art class from CodeLite, now tabs look a fair bit nicer, especially in linux
- New maintenance option: cleaning out entries that are identical duplicates of an IWAD lump

- 'Replace In Maps' stuff

- Implemented basic 'remove unused textures' and 'remove unused patches' actions
- Added mp3 and tracker module playback
- Changed the browser to use a proper font for item names
- Browser background changed to the checkered texture used in most other gfx views (optional)

- Texture editor: implemented support for "UseOffsets" property
- Added "Edit Level Script" button to MapEntryPanel and FraggleScript language
- Added playback of Wolfenstein digitized sounds (VSWAP)
- Added COLORMAP lump generation
- Various additions and improvements to texture editor for ZDoom TEXTURES format
- Added option to colour entry list item background by entry type |
* and yes XWE still has its right to exist, because if you know what you do and have a backup of your wad (hehe) and you have admin rights and solved any other problems XWE works fine. If you know what you do it's like playing with fire.

Honestly, it isn't bad. It just lacks some features (but frankly I personally need none of those). As for manual backuping, the issues about wad corruption were fixed long ago (mainly by auto-backuping your wad before attempting to do anything with it).
But yes, it's good to see Slade being actively maintained. |

XWE is great used it for many years. Switch to Slade when Win7 came out. Both are versatile IMO. XWE great when you reach expert mode, then it's like wam bam, every action is permanent and amazing. Boom boom I'm flipping tabs like flapjacks. Slade is quite great, still getting used to it sometimes. TY for teh heads-up. |

DB1, XWE, WhackEd2, and paint were tools of the trade for years.
Now I'm using GZDoomBuilder, Gimp2.0, and Slade3.
WhackEd4 is out too, but it seems to messy for me. So I'm still using whackEd2 and text editors for dehacked. |

I remember when mapped with Doom builder 1 and one older version of XWE, it was pure gold, then i realized that there were some better editors, now i use Doom builder 2 and Slade 3, i really prefer Slade 3 over XWE, and DB2 over DB1, but sometimes i go back to those programs just for melancholy
Thanks for that, i'm using Slade 3 too much now, this is great |

Would you really recommend xwe to a newbie though? Really?
Slade 3 does the job without crashes or nasty live edits. The interface is much easier to work with, too, and it's still being developed. That's not to say xwe is no good: it's great for those who know it very well; and don't want the hassle of learning the ropes of Slade. |

Yeh, newbies need to learn from scratch so they properly learn how-to and do proper cool wads |

I've never really given this a try. What does this program have to offer over XWE? I mean, does it do anything XWE can not do? |

It has a lot more features and more stable. XWE tends to corrupt certain files when mass importing large amounts (like 600-700 entries) and screws up your wad if you accidentally leave it open along with doom builder.
I am an XWE fan too however, so for basic tasks XWE is just as well usable. I use XWE for most things, and when it fails I open up SLADE to do the task.
You should give a try to SLADE and discover it yourself, it can be pretty handy over XWE sometimes. |

Wad Author is indeed a monumental footprint of our heritage, yet so many easier-to-use programs remain to sate your editing curiosities. |
