For some time now, we have felt like TNS has been drifting away from the original ZDaemon feel. We kept wondering whether it had been a mistake to start on the then fresh 1.09 beta and not staying with 1.08. With the evaluation period of 1.10, that we set for ourselves, now over, the decision is more than clear.

We are going back to ZDaemon 1.08, beacuse:
  • What is ZDaemon survival without invisible tracing revenant fireballs? Can pain really be considered pain and Slaughterfest a challenge?
  • We have to turn on randomization to get the "ghost monsters" difficulty modifier these days. Why do we have to do that when this used to be "for free" back then?
  • What kind of doomers will the newcomers become when they can just see the damage they dealt in the scoreboard instead of having to make an estimate based on knowing the monster hp and weapon damage values and their random modifiers?
  • Who does not keep a spare non-wide display for Doom and needs widescreen support in the game? Seriously, this is not 1994 anymore, it is 20 years later and most of us can afford to own a spare display for Doom and know how to switch them.
  • I could go on, but this post would get too long ...

Anyway, with the dev team removing all the good features and adding ones that are not ZDaemon-like at all, we have no choice. The new 1.08 server will be located on zds://37.175.36.354:10666 and it will be online starting from the following session. See you all there!

Let's not forget the invisible archvile flames. Attacks from a miniboss-type monster should be as unforgiving as the players can handle. After all, we've been speedrunning classic megawads for years, we know when to yank our underpants on top of our heads and hide behind a wall.

Don't forget nohoming.wad to change the Revenant fireballs if needed. They don't trace any more and are a bit faster.

Aww, I was really hoping for some juicy, rage-fueled flamewar. Oh well, it seems Zdaemon users are not that gullible...
