Well the quasi-official pattern I've been following has been to alternate between coop and survival. Depending on wad availability, I'll probably continue this trend (roughly) since I know we've got fans of both game modes out there. So last time I went through this rigamarole it was co-op. That means it's time to survive!

Back on #135 we played Whispers of Satan which was co-authored by Paul Corfiatis. This week we're back with two episodes for the original Doom featuring maps made by the same fellow titled "Simply Phobos" and "Death Tormentation", replacing E1 and E4 respectively. You can definitely feel Paul's style in these two packs by the lighting, custom-made music, tricky traps, and segments paying tribute to the original IWAD levels.

The maps vary in difficulty between E1 and E4, so we're just going to go with two lives on this. A lagniappe I dug up for you all: a small wad which tweaks the sprites of the lesser bad guys when they die. Lacerated pinky arms, decapitated imps, flaming zombiemen. You know, that wholesome kind of gore we appreciate around here!

AND OMG SCREENIES! We need those, right!?

I was hesitant about making it survival this week. But then I remembered that this is the original Doom, so the corridors aren't packed with dangerous revenants and chaingunners. The original bestiary is much more forgiving than Doom II's. :p

If anyone is going to run these wads ever again, leave E1M8 off the maplist - it's bad karma. It crashes ZD and left both the Euro and American servers hanging on the intermission screen.

Krawa was around to bail us out on the Euro side so we actually got to see E4. E1 wasn't anything to write home about as far as cooperative mode goes. All in all it was a belly-flop. High-fives of pity all-around now.

EDIT: Yeah, it was a MAPINFO problem, particularly this bit, as spotted afterward when Cybershark and I went poking about:
Code:
next EndGame1

That's the bad karma right there.

Yeah, need to make a error report for this...

Maps were nice enough, but I was glad we didn't have too many players for them. 4 was plenty. Coulda done with tougher monsters or something, because I wasn't even dying. Hell, I even won one round! Shocked
And as I mentioned on the night, I really enjoyed E1M6!

But Cuppy's only focusing on the negative here! After the survival server sank we decided to carry on ZDSing on ShinFFA and attracted a good size crowd to it. That one's always a pleasure Smile
