I have been thinking how the ZDaemoN community lacks a cooperative tournament section so I have proposed to manage one myself, the [WCT] Worldwide Cooperative Tournaments. Mainly to benefit those around the globe who wish to play doom competitively without having to enter a deathmatch or CTF Tourney.

Basically; entrants will find a partner, give their selves a team name, and will fight to clear a coop map together, scores will be based on the amount of monsters killed, the time taken and the total amount of deaths. Then entrants will take a print-screen or demo and post it on the website / forum. There may also be a referee present in some games.

For example if they play doom2 map07 and kill 35 monsters in 4 minutes and each player dies once their score would show:

Kills: 35
Deaths: 2
Time: 4.00
Deaths: 4

I will then collate this data like so:

(Kills ÷ Time) - Deaths = Score
(35 ÷ 4) - 2 = 6.75

The team with the highest score would win the round. If a team has the same score as another then lowest deaths team will win. In the unlikely event of the final score being the same for two teams, a re-match will be taken.

I hope there will be an interest in this from a few people to get it going, and i will be making the website if things get going. Please feel free to make a post.

And notify me if you would like to see it happen!

Many thanks,
Sniper.

That's a really funky idea, Sniper. I'd be interested to help out if I knew more details.

When would the tournament(s) be running? And how many rounds would there be? I'm pretty sure there'll need to be mroe than one map per round, but anyway, I'll have a chat later about this, tea now...

Highest score wins? So then... if its
(Kills ÷ Time) - Deaths = Score

then why not just use a long time, i.e.
time = 4 minutes
(35 ÷ 4) - 2 = 6.75

time = 40 minutes
(35 ÷ 40) - 2 = 73

Which, according to highest score....would mean that the second team won by A LOT, even though they were actually worse

i suggest capping the kill count at 100%. killing more means either harvesting an archvile just to raise the score, or incompetency in killing him :)

aw, i'm not suggesting that! archies are probably the coolest monster in the game and they're tossed almost everywhere anyways :) also, they're an awesome tactical tool ;)

This is a wicked idea Sniper Smile

Sure coop can't be played competitively as easily as CTF/DM but that's a no brainer. Yet still people slag it off as the weakest gamemode.

With some good organisation then you could have something as cool as TDMania here Smile

Wouldn't you need a different scoring method than used currently? Else it would just be a race to see who can kill the easy enemies(imps, marines, etc) on the level.

There was a thread on the old UBR forums about a coop tourney, as usual I just never got round to it. Ofcourse COOP can be played competitively, however, I think to work very well we would need maps built specifically with competition in mind. For example.

8 player COOP. Symmetrical maps like CTF with an exit switch in the middle. First team to the exit switch wins. If you could set it up so that each player had an exit switch and the whole team had to hit theirs to win, that would be great. What would be even better would be a 1 life limit per player also, much like Survival in ST, but where the player spawns trapped somewhere in the map and team members would have to rescue them to progress. The possibilities are endless for the mappers, you could have maps where the opposing teams never meet in the map, or alternatively there could be a variety of switches that set off booby traps to halt the other team.

What would be good is to get a community mapping project going to make a ZDCOOP wad maybe starting with 10 maps?

Other than that you could just use existing maps and use a kill death ratio or speed as a scoring system, but I think that would negate making something really special that everyone would want to play.

What do you guys think, especially Cybershark?

I don't see a problem with the current idea Sniper came up with.
It's just a case of choosing maps carefully I believe.

I know Sniper had doom2 map07 in mind as a starter (Don't know if I should have said that)

But basically it's a case of gettign rid of everything asap and flicking the exit. Come to think of it, Doom 2 Map 07 is a superb map choice! Get in there lad!!

But you see my point for that particular map right? Snipers theory works perfectly for that one. (No jumping!!)
