Good times... I can't believe this place has become a ghost town. So many CTF memories from the 2004-2008 era. I just came back after a decade of being away, and only a few people are online tonight.

Aye, it's a bit sad, but always thankful for the memories and the people that helped make them!

This place will always hold a special place in my heart and there's a handful of friends that meant more to me than I think they will ever know. ❤️

People's habits and likes change over time. Back then, CTF was "the thing" around here, now Survival seems to be much more popular!
With mods like Brutal Doom, speedrunning events like GDQ, newer Doom games, the franchise is thriving! ZDaemon is still going strong, aims to provide a modern experience of classic Doom and does it remarkably well!

2004-2008 was definitely the "Golden Age" for FFA, CTF, and especially clan activity. The start of international leagues for CTF and Duel kind of took the top talent away from public games; but a lot of us are still around and active Smile

I still play and make maps that work on ALL ports. A few months ago I finished a new CTF map pack and the testing sessions for that reminded me of those good ol' times (I'm talking 8v8 with lots of spectators for a couple hours at a time).

Maybe a CTF tourney/league of some kind would infuse some life? I've always enjoyed ZDaemon as part of a complete classic Doom regimen, so it's sad to see the activity dwindle :/

Bits and pieces are in-motion in the background.

There are plans for future tournaments to go ahead, once the new functionality has been completed.

Otherwise there is now more linkage between tournaments and participants (or as much as possible given the time span):
https://forums.zdaemon.org/viewtopic.php?t=18227

Said tournament participation will now display on your player profile on the stats site.

There is still a lot people who are regular players but just semi-active. Year after year they still come play some games every month or every couple of months. But it is hard to find anymore players who play every day like on golden era of ZDaemon on early 2000s and mid 2000s.

There was a time I played ZDaemon basically every day. Now sometimes it's a whole month or more without a DM. My younger self would be disgusted by my performance Mad

Word. I'd probably be turning out a new map or idea every other day too. Good times!

Idk, are there any plans for you to ever finally face me for the duel I challenged you to, Roland le Fartere?

FRAGS

I WANT THEM!

FRAGS

I NEED THEM

Where's the SSG? More importantly where's the Doomguys?! I restarted the Doomshack.org servers just a few days ago - they're nice and fresh, and the Jacob's Ladder server has been improved with a small fix courtesy of Domains. I really do hope to see some of you in there some time. No idea how we'd go about organizing it..

Maybe the ZDaemon community oldies can come together by the dozens one more time for the 30th anniversary? We really need a deathmatch to go down, a BIG one that lasts 8 hours or more.

Me and my friend MrCrispy started a server for it on Zandronum for the 25th anniversary, and my buddy Decay was there watching over it with me. The server had 15 to 30 people in it (and sometimes more!) for I want to say 12 hours almost. It was out of this world. I wouldn't be surprised if it was well over 500 unique IP addresses connecting that day, in total. It was insane!

I'd love to see it happen again on ZDaemon for the 30th.

I can easily say that the best time I ever had playing videogames and being part of an online community was here on ZDaemon. I think about those times, often. It's a special thing, and playing here through the 2000s was the pinnacle of that.

I also recently read some of my old posts and realised how much of an arse I could be! Ha!
