The idea here is to make voice chat a viable option on public servers by allowing server admins to exclude known spammers and abusers from participating in voice chat and allowing players to quickly deal with new ones via a "vote mute" command. The latter might be redundant with current client possibilities, but it would disallow people to continue the abuse right away and it might discourage them from doing it in the future if they see that they get blocked completely.
The implementation could simply copy the existing banlist and "vote kick" functionality, without a globally enforced banlist though, but with the possibility to load additional bans from a URL (preferably even from multiple URLs). A player who is blocked by a server-side voice banlist should be notified of it when he tries to speak. Crossing the usual icon, that appears when speaking, with a red line would be one option, but maybe it would be better to state more clearly that it is an intentional block/ban so that it would not be mistakenly interpreted as a different issue.
The voice chat configuration possibilities on the client are very nice, but some people are still oblivious to them, and it would be more convenient even for those who know how to use them if they didn't each have to manually block each problematic person that appears (actually, each nickname in this case, I believe). A nice little effect would also be the reduced traffic to the server by cutting the transmission right on the banned client.
Last, but probably the most important thing and the impulse to make this request: For organized games where lots of people are present and with admins also around and able to react, but with no tools now, this feature would be gold. |
