|
|
We're pleased to announce the release of the first public 1.09 beta, as well as a 1.08.08c upgrade. Here are a few of the goodies you will find in this release:
- New Picture-In-Picture feature when spectating duels.
- "DVD-like" playback controls (play/pause/forward/backward) while watching demos.
- New "double domination" mode.
- Team radar that shows the position of teammates in all team modes.
- Built in railgun, zooming (sniper scope) and an instagib mode.
- New, highly customizable font system, offering improved readability of console and ingame messages.
- Improved unlagged.
- Much smoother movement for higher ping players.
- Clients can control the number of incoming packets (user-selectable fineticks).
- Tons of coop fixes that will make the mode much more enjoyable!
- Greatly improved Heretic support.
- Increased playerlimit from 16 to 50.
- Working polyobjects.
- Much improved wine support (linux) for the launcher and ZRC.
- Several new DMFLAGS for improved fidelity to doom2.exe.
- Improved team balancing; it should result in more balanced team games.
- A new update mechanism in ZLauncher that ensures proper and easy updates of all game related files. The mechanism will significantly simplify later upgrades to newer (beta or final) versions.
Here is the complete change log.
There are also a few caveats:
- Demo recording is not supported in the 1.09 beta release because the netcode protocol is not finalized yet (ie., those demos would not be playable later on).
- There are no publicly distributable 1.09 servers yet for the same reason as above: the netcode is not finalized yet. Such servers will be made available when the protocol is finalized.
- Server hosts should update to the new 1.08.08c server. It fixes some crashes, a security (DOS) problem and adds some new features like the new team balancing.
Download it here.

I'll give this a try, but if I'm not able to get a Linux binary for it then I doubt it will keep me around long. |

On a more helpful Linux approach, I couldn't get it to load without some help, so as per the terminal output. You'll need to grab an extra DLL for this to work in older versions of wine WINE, which is easily handled by winetricks. It works fine out of the box on newer versions of wine.
If you have the dll issue, here is a short guide to fixing that.
Firstly, fire up your terminal.
Download winetricks:
Code: | wget http://winetricks.org/winetricks |
Make it executable:
Code: | chmod +x winetricks |
Grab the VC Runtime for the DLLs:
Code: | ./winetricks vcrun6 |
Profit!
Tested on Wine 1.0.1 using Debian Squeeze.

important for people that had the closed beta installed before:
delete the old VER_10900 and VER_10809 folders.
people that use custom commandline parameters to auto record demos or ingame logfiles
should add %BASE% as a prefix to relative paths.
e.g. -netrecord %BASE%\Demos\%DATE%_%TIME%_%WAD%
regarding the missing dll in wine. we are aware of the problem but didnt get around to determine how that dependecy creeped in yet.

So you're either saying that you don't care about players being around, you're just being an asshole, or both?

It runs out of the box on wine 1.3.24. The glacial refresh speeds in ZLauncher have been fixed, and the application actually closes now, but it's still a long way from a proper, native application. |

You may be better off compiling the latest WINE or finding the "wine-unstable" packages. The WINE existing in Debian is extremely out of date (I have upgraded myself personally to the "unstable" packages) and things run much much better.
On a side note, has the full 50 players been tested yet at all on any server?
I assume for demo rewinding you use "key frames", how often is each key frame? |

Yeah it works out-of-the-box in the newest wine (just tested 1.3.24, I'll edit) but the mouse is handled different in the latter, so I stick with the former.
I also had a mouse issue, where I could not turn it to the right. This was remedied by starting with a fresh config. |

It has been done with bots but not with players, yet. Should work provided the server has enough bandwidth. |

Hmm? It seems like this would be something that can be changed back in some sort of configuration change.
As for the mouse in latest WINE + zd 1.09, it feels a lot better than what I had back in September. It still seems to be impossible to find the perfect sensitivity (i.e. in Linux Zdaemon/Skulltag I use 2.0, Odamex 70, Chocolate Doom 50). ZDaemon's mouse under wine is either too fast or too slow. |

Check this out. You'll find more than 50 in there. In fact, I was stress-testing it with 64, but they didn't fit on screen (note you don't see me either in the screenshot; I was at the bottom since I was spectating) |

To clarify: this applies to all demo versions. no need to convert them. just load a 1.05 or whatever version demo and you will be able to use all playback controls. |

Also, does anyone know how Double Domination works? I was curious to find out, but the servers that host the gamemode are not reachable because the wadfiles they are hosting are not available for download. |

I tried to post in this thread, but the sheer awesomeness of it had melted my brain and left me a gibbering wreck.
This is absolutely brilliant. The demo feature is a massive help and the new netcode on 1.9 servers is just fucking awesome. I am seriously impressed by all of the changes and bug fixes, took me and age to read the changelog! |

hahah.. dumb me just ran to try it out without reading the info and then i was like fffff why demo not recorded?! i'm yet to play a game with higher ping or larger player count to test it in harsh conditions, but i've loved everything so far.
btw, i think trebuchet should be the default font over chicago, it looks better and reads better. :) |
