1on1 Mapping Competition

UPDATE: First beta is out! Download link at the bottom of the post

The idea is to make a duel map based on one of the two basemaps.
The basemaps will not have any sectors or linedefs or vertexes.. but just things pre-set in them.

This competition is Boom-compatible.

For a better description see and also rules

Rules that apply to both basemaps:
  • You may not add/remove/move or otherwise modify any weapons
  • The maps must be Boom-compatible.
  • Maps must be made for 1on1 (duel).
  • One map per contestant.
  • You may not use existing maps for your sectors/linedefs/vertexes.
  • No voodoo dolls.
  • You can use new textures and flats, as long as you dont have too many of them, and they dont give us trouble when compiling the wad.
  • For new animated textures boom ANIMATED lump must be used, and its source included with the wad.
  • Custom colormaps can also be used, as long as there's not too many of those either.
  • Maps must not require jumping to reach any areas in them.
Extra rules for Basemap-A (lax version)
  • You may not add/remove/move/modify any weapons by ANY MEANS.
  • You may not add/remove/move/modify any deathmatch starts. You can however change their direction.
  • Changing Z-coordinate of any thing is allowed (eg. things on lifts).
Extra rules for Basemap-B (strict version)
  • You may not add/remove/move/modify any pickups or deathmatch starts by ANY MEANS.
So you can pretty much only add things used for decoration/obstacles.
  • Changing Z-coordinate of any thing is allowed (eg. things on lifts).
  • You may NOT change the direction of player starts.
  • You may NOT have a short blue firestick at coordinates x:368, y:1891.

OK: map has been submitted, good job.

Unable to open the basemap in your editor of choice?
Here are compatibility versions of basemap A and B, which should open in all map editors:
basemap-a_compat.wad
basemap-b_compat.wad

Once we're finished, we'll compile a wad with all the duel maps. The map order will not be the same as the mapslots given here.

EDIT:
You should post progress screenshots of your map in this thread, so we know what your map status is, and that you can get feedback, criticism, fanboys, motivation and possible voters for your map Razz

Ya'know... why not?

Sign me up for B. It can't possibly take that long to make a 1on1 map.

I'm confused as hell with this but I like 1vs1 and I used to map...? So sure, shoot me up with whatever, probably A as it looks like it's less popular!

Oh and how long do we get? Someone needs to explain with diagrams, pie charts and nice pictures.

From what I can see Nero, it looks like each category has a select base model map and the people of that category are responsible for texturing and placing all things. It would seem the things amount isn't limited to a certain number, so feel free to go all out there.

My question with it is, I know you do not wish for us to build sectors or linedefs or vertexes, but are we free to edit the base models for the purpose of detail? Like splitting a linedef, changing alignment and adding separate textures for more detail?

From what I get, actually we're supposed to draw sectors and stuff ( we'll only be given a .wad containing Things and nothing else ), so yeah, detailing is our business.
Basically, you can't move / modify the items, but you can build everything else around them ( sectors and so on ).

That, or maybe your post was an attempt at confusing Nero even more :p

Haha, holy shit. Nero I am so sorry, I completely misread that. Granted, I read it at 3 in the morning and my marbles were all out of order.
Could someone send me the boom.cfg, mine is corrupt it seems and I don't use DB because I'm an outdated piece of crap.
