If we make a newer "Zdaemon" ourselves, would you consider on using it? |

My guess would be a resounding "no".
Why not contribute by fixing already existing bugs and improving what we already have? Go grab the 1.06 source and get started! |

What do you mean by "ourselves", do you have coders and free time ( loads of free time I mean ) to do it ?
You know, in a few weeks the next version of Skulltag will be released, and Odamex too, so I guess it's not the good time to start making a port on your own....
Besides, there are not many Doom players, and this would be bad to "divide" this community depending on what port you play on, I think.
+1 EarthQuake, maybe you should help the ZDaemon development staff instead of thinking about creating a new one |

No, we do not tend to make a new community or new engine. I mean we want to improve Zdaemon itself, based on a newer version Zdoom etc. |

Zdaemon's source is closed and, unfortunately, I don't see signs of it opening. You're options are:
- Becoming a developer of either Skulltag or Zdaemon (good luck )
- Contributing to odamex (whenever it gets released)
- Starting from scratch with csdoom (old zdoom, older then zdaemon's version)
- Starting from scratch with modern zdoom (rewrite all the p2p network code and more work)
I personally think that modern zdoom's engine is a complete mess. Its barely good enough for windows, but when it comes to portability, its performance everywhere else is intolerable. The engine has separate implementations of graphics and input for windows and non-windows operating systems, so the SDL implementation is decrepit and terrible.
Well, that is, if you want a cross platform port. Having it run on POSIX will get you a large market share |

LOL
The option that was not mentioned was starting with the 1.6 ZDaemon code. There is no need to start with CSDoom. I have considered the possibility of branching off with the 1.6 code and maintaining an open source port. After much thought I realized that most people don't care about the openness of the game and just want to play it. With the time it would take to catch up to where ZDaemon is now let alone the possibility of ever surpassing it, it would be quite difficult to build a substantial player base.
As for the community being split, ZDaemon was the original instigator of that. I am not knocking them for it as it was apparent that CSDoom was done advancing. But the way that it originally began wasn't exactly the most ethical story. There are still people that play CSDoom (at least the last time I checked) and won't have it any other way so there is still somewhat of a split. |

Instead of breeding off another new port, might as well just spend time to contributing to the development of zdaemon it takes time to build up a fanbase and thats what zdaemon already has.
csdoom was awesome but development was moving at a slow pace, whereas nightfang has a crew and supporting members coming from different backgrounds who were able to provide with a website with forums and server hosting services which help to build up a popular dm community. Zdaemon is another reason that leads doomserv to termination |

I had started this before but abandoned the idea because too much needed fixing in the original zdaemon and i decided to focus more of my efforts there.
The main issue would be zdaemon is now closed source under the original doom license allowing this provided there is no commercial gain. Unless you are trusted in the zdaemon development team, you would be unable to gain access to much of the netcode.
(And please no bullshit about security through obscurity crap, obscurity is a very powerful security tool but must be combined with other methods to be effective.) |

You guys should wait for 1.09. There is alot of really awesome stuff being fixed and improved on, as well as lots of stuff that is already fixed. This is going to be the best update that we've seen yet. Just hang in there. |
